In this exercise on fabrication, we were given a compressed foam block and tasked to explore the capabilities of CNC routing. We could create any sort of patterns on the foam block through the subtractive manufacturing method.

The similarity in colour between the foam block provided to us and the desert gave me the inspiration to recreate the terrain of sand dunes in the desert.

Taking further studies into the appearance of sand and sand dunes, I realised that the ripple pattern in the sand created by wind resembles the pattern created by CNC routing. Sand dunes across a desert may appear in different heights, lengths, and steepness.

A combination of simple sinusoidal functions created waves across the material, and by adding a constant increment to various increments, the depth of the cut decreases from one corner to another diagonally.
