Located in the heart of Bayshore Link, the development serves as a vital hub for cycling enthusiasts and a waypoint for cyclists traveling to and from East Coast Park. Embracing a car-lite vision, the project reimagines connectivity by dissolving traditional boundaries between cycling destinations. By seamlessly integrating residential spaces with surrounding amenities and creating fluid transitions between starting points and destinations, the design establishes a new paradigm where cycling becomes the primary mode of movement. This approach not only enhances the cycling experience but also transforms how residents interact with their community, making sustainable transportation an integral part of daily life.

Cycling-compelled corridors

With the overarching concept of encouraging cycling as the primary mode of circulation, my take on it was to not only facilitate cycling by making infrastructure more cyclist-friendly, but to also to a certain extent compel residents to cycle. This is achieved simultaneously by intentionally creating lengthy pathways that allows for gentler gradients, and rendering cycling a more preferrable method of movement over walking.

5 steps of operations

Massing

Units are agglomerated into a row to generate length, achieving desirable gradients of ramps for later operations, and stacked upwards to create volume. Each row is then splayed at intentionally varied angles, creating unique voids between each row of “units” that can be purposed for community use. Splaying the rows also create visual interest externally, as well as internally between units. Each unit is stepped up, which forms the foundation of ramps that placed above the units to facilitate cyclist circulation. Extensions were added, creating more private units at the cul-de-sacs, and forming junctions where communal or commercial activity can take place. Bicycle garages are extruded alongside the ramp, forming entryways into the unit directly from the ramps.

Bicycle Garage + common area

Blurring Boundaries

Residents transition from the exterior to the interior via the bicycle garage, which overlooks the common area that is shared by units.

1-bedroom units are arranged in pairs, sharing a common space and bicycle storage area. Activities requiring less privacy, such as dining, cooking, and laundry, are accommodated in the shared communal space.

An alternative typology of units promotes a more transient lifestyle. Studio apartments provide adequate space for residents to rest and relax in their private domains, while other activities are centralized in shared spaces, fostering interaction among residents.
